ABSTRACT
Female genital schistosomiasis is characterized by the occurrence of
schistosome ova or worms in the upper and or lower genital tracts.
However, morbidity caused by this phenomenon has received little or
no attention from researchers and the scientific community for a long
time now. This much was acknowledged by WHO which in 1997 through
the gender task force of its tropical Disease Research Programme
(TDK) included FGS among scientific areas deserving high research
priority. So far evidence of the morbidity associated with this disease entity is supported
mainly by Clinical observations as valid immunological and or field epidemiological data are still
lacking. This is made worse by the fact that diagnosis of FGS of the upper genital tract has been
incidental. This paper therefore, discusses FGS, highlighting its public health implications, need
for increased global attention and the importance of according high research priority to this disease
entity.
Keywords: Female genital schistosomiasis, Clinical observations, valid immunological.
