ABSTRACT

Siddha system is effective in treating most skin problems including psoriasis. There are so many herbal drugs which are used for the treatment of skin diseases in Siddha system. In the present study five such plants which are commonly used for skin diseases are selected and an attempt has been made to evaluate these plants based on their physico-chemical, preliminary phytochemical and HPTLC analyses. The plants selected for the study are Acalypha indica Linn. (Leaf), Aristolochia bracteolata Retz. (Wholeplant), Capparis zeylanica Linn. (Leaf), Sterculia foetida Linn. (Stem bark) and Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R. Br. (Stem bark). Physico-chemical analysis and preliminary phytochemical analysis were carried out by the methods mentioned in the standard books. HPTLC studies of the alcohol extracts of the plant materials were carried out and the chromatograms and fingerprinting profiles at 254 nm, 366 nm, and 575 nm after derivatisation were documented. Since the plants selected for the study are used for the treatment of skin diseases, an attempt was made to find out the presence of similar phytoconstituents in the alcohol extracts of the plants by comparing the Rf values obtained at 254 nm, 366 nm and 575 nm after derivatisation. The similar phytoconstituents obtained may be the active compounds responsible for the medicinal effect of the plants. The present study provides sufficient information about the physico-chemical parameters, preliminary phytochemical characters and HPTLC fingerprints of the selected plant materials and thus help in the identification, standardization and quality control of these medicinal plants.

Keywords: Skin diseases, Siddha system, Herbal drugs, Physico-chemical analysis and HPTLC study.
